Coblenz
Koblenz derives
its name from the Latin
confluents
and has benefited historically from its strategic
position at tlle confluence of the Mosel and Rhine. Besides
serving as a centre for the wines of the two valleys, Koblenz
used to levy tolls on merchant boats passing from one river to
the other. More than four-fifths of the town was destroyed in W
orId War II,
but it still
offers an attractive glimpse of its past and is a good place to
get your first taste of the local wines offered.
